Boy Scouts to honor teen for coming to aid of mom, sisterThe Daily Herald reports: The Boys Scouts of America is awarding a West Dundee teen with one of its highest honors - the Medal of Heroism Award - for coming to the aid of his mom and sister after an accident. Alex Reinbrecht says he used his first aid and CPR training to help his sister Tatiana and mother Marcela when their SUV crashed in Indiana last fall.

![]() Bribery trial could get underway today for developerOpening statements are likely today in the bribery trial of developer Calvin Boender after lawyers questioned more than 30 prospective jurors Tuesday.
Boender is accused of paying for almost $40,000 in home improvements for then-Chicago Ald. Isaac "Ike" Carothers, 29th, to win his support for a large real estate development in his West Side ward. On Tuesday, lawyers questioned two panels of prospective jurors, asking if they had any experience dealing with Chicago's zoning system or ever had contact with aldermen or Mayor Richard Daley. Attorneys are expected to wrap up jury selection Wednesday before making their opening remarks. -- Jeff Coen

![]() Push for Civil War hero to receive Medal of HonorThe secretary of the Army says a Wisconsin Civil War hero deserves the Congressional Medal of Honor.
U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold, a Wisconsin Democrat, has been lobbying on behalf of a group of Wisconsin citizens pushing for Alonzo H. Cushing to receive the award. Cushing, from Delafield west of Milwaukee, fought in several battles, including Bull Run and Gettysburg, where he was seriously wounded during Pickett's Charge. But he stayed in the fight and was killed. Secretary of the Army John McHugh has sent Feingold a letter saying he will recommend Congress approve the award. McHugh says Cushing clearly distinguished himself. -- Associated Press

![]() Man dies after jumping into river to elude policeA man given probation just two days ago for criminal damage to property died Tuesday night after plunging into the Chicago River while being chased by police for tagging a building. Jason Kitchekeg, 26, of Mokena was one of three men being chased by officers for spray-painting a building on Ashland Avenue, police said. Cops caught two of the men, but Kitchekeg jumped into the river near the 2800 block of South Ashland, officials said. Aided by a helicopter, the police Marine Unit and Fire Department personnel worked for about 30 minutes to rescue the man after he was spotted at about 6:45 p.m. in the river near Bubbly Creek. Firefighters pulled Kitchekeg from the water and he was rushed to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:16 p.m., according to hospital spokesman Marcel Bright. Court records show Kitchekeg had pleaded guilty several times to graffiti-related charges. On Monday, he was sentenced to one year of probatio... In other news, Scrap Metal is now available as an Xbox 360 download. It's a top-down combat racer--imagine a cross between R.C. Pro-Am and Twisted Metal--and I've really enjoyed what I've played thus far. The various missions--sometimes you're going after one specific target, sometimes you're just straight-up racing--mix things up enough so that things don't get too mundane, plus unlocking / upgrading / customizing all the different cars has an oddly addictive hook. My first car? Pink with a big donut on top. Is it worth the 1200 Microsoft Points / $15? I'm not sure, I haven't put in enough time to say for sure, but if you're interested, ... ![]() Crash snarles inbound Ike near LaramieCrews responded this morning to a traffic incident on the inbound side of the Eisenhower Expressway near Laramie Avenue, state police said. The incident itself was minor, just a "two-vehicle spin-out," a dispatcher said. Some lanes of traffic were blocked as crews tried to clear the roadway. Check back for details.

![]() Woman, 91, dies in Far Northwest Side crashA 91-year-old woman was killed in an auto crash Tuesday afternoon near O'Hare International Airport, police said. The incident happened at about 3 p.m. near Higgins and River Roads, police said. The woman was a passenger in a Buick LeSabre with her 87-year-old husband. The Buick was headed west on Higgins and was making a left turn on to River when it was hit by an eastbound Chrysler sedan, according to police. The woman suffered multiple injuries and was taken to Lutheran General Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. She was identified as Sylvia Thomas of Schiller Park, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. Her husband was cited for failure to yield on a left turn, not having insurance and driving with a suspended or revoked license. The police Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating the crash. -- Staff report
